Let’s Go GeoCaching For Rail History!
By Valli Hoski (ValliG)

Rail enthusiasts often share their love with several cross-over hobbies.  Geocaching is one of those (want to know
more?  See www.geocaching.com !)  Take a visit to these transit-oriented geocaches in Dallas and Chicago which will
warm the heart of many a rail enthusiast.  Take up a new hobby and try to find these caches. If you get near the track,
you have gone too far!  Geocachers take their safety seriously.

Blue Line Train Series - This is one of 6 caches that make up the DART light rail Blue line series to Garland
from City Place in Dallas. Each hide is a little different but they are all within the boundaries of the train station
    and parking lots. http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?guid=13ccdff7-bfaf-4504-901c-fd988cdc3499

Downtown Train - This cache is hidden near downtown Rockwall where we noticed a strange phenomenon. http:

D’ART of Wylie Bus Stops Series –This series of traditional caches (done by ValliG) focuses on small Texas
towns and why they need mass transit, particularly Wylie, Texas. Have fun exploring outer Dallas County, and see
where bus stops need to be someday in Wylie, just not there yet. Dedicated to Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART)
for the fine train and bus service it provides to enlightened communities elsewhere. And, one cache honors the
Chapter’s own Captain Transit and Super-Volunteer Claude. http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?

Chicago Railroads Series – This series is a good reason and easy way to explore Chicago’s local and national
railroad sites.  Start with “GM’s Electromotive Division” cache in the home of your editor’s favorite locomotive, the
    E and F EMD units, at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=b115bc79-a845-4b3b-b20f-

Chicago Caches Reachable by Public Transit – This cache list, collated by a good friend of your editor, is a
wonderful way to learn more about Chicago’s history, canals, boulevard system, ethnic neighborhoods, and yes,
enjoy Chicago’s public transit system. See http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?guid=20696169-

Who’s Colors? Series - The Caches in this series are Railroad "Hot Spots" in Chicago, places to watch trains,
or "Railfan" as listed in "Trains Magazine".  Also, one honors a "fallen flag" a road that has been purchased by
another railroad or is no longer in business.  Cache locations include Rondout, DeVal (Des Plaines), Lemont,
Hinsdale, Blue Island, Waukegan. Visit Rondout at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?
